Neurological Physiotherapy

What is Neurological Physiotherapy?

Neurological Physiotherapy is based on the phenomenon of neuroplasticity, which refers to the human brain’s incredible ability to adapt and change throughout the lifespan. Our Physiotherapists are trained in the Bobath approach to neurological rehabilitation which integrates current evidence in neurophysiology with a detailed movement analysis assessment to identify areas of strength and areas for improvement. After an assessment, our Neurological Physiotherapists develop an individualized treatment plan based on your goals.

Neurological Physiotherapy treatment can include:

  • Education on your condition and how to manage symptoms
  • Hands-on facilitation to activate muscles groups and re-train movements
  • Walking retraining and improving endurance
  • Specific strengthening exercises and improving control during movement
  • Managing muscle tone and spasticity
  • Improving balance
  • Transfer training
  • Pilates reformer training (if appropriate)
  • Equipment education, prescription and fitting
  • Return to hobbies
  • Increasing independence within your home and community

Our therapists can collaborate with you, your medical team and your family to increase your participation in daily activities and to improve your quality of life. Our Physiotherapists may also connect you with other resources in the community to aid in your rehabilitation. For instance, with patient consent, we collaborate with Occupational Therapists, Orthotists, Social workers, Personal Support Workers and Dieticians to ensure your care is holistic and to optimize your quality of life.

Our Approach

Our Neurological Physiotherapists are trained in the Bobath approach to neurological rehabilitation and have gone through extensive post-graduate training to best serve this population. This approach emphasizes careful movement analysis and assessment of sensory and motor function in order to treat an individual. The neurological system as a whole is considered as well as how to optimize a person’s recovery in their home environment through consideration of the home set-up, home exercises, advice on seating/equipment and collaboration with community resources. The patient’s goals always guide Physiotherapy treatment sessions.
