Pedorthics

What is Pedorthics?

Pedorthics is the management and treatment of conditions of the foot, ankle, and lower extremities. This often requires fitting, fabricating, and adjusting of pedorthic devices. Pedorthics is about using footwear to help treat and ease these foot-related problems.

What conditions would an Pedorthist be called upon to assist?

Many people suffer from foot problems. Issues range from calluses to conditions that require hospitalization. Pedorthists can help treat these problems non-surgically by creating or modifying footwear as part of an overall treatment regimen prescribed by your doctor. Footwear is an essential part of treatment, as mobility is affected by everything that touches or surrounds the foot. Footwear modifications can also be made to simply make shoes more comfortable.

What does a Pedorthist do?

So much of your body health originates from your foot, and your sense of balance and comfort. A pedorthist will assess your situation and then help you select and modify footwear best suited to help people maintain or regain as much mobility as possible. In some instances building custom footware is necessary. When your ability to walk is affected, so many associated elements that touch your foot are effected. Whether it’s foot orthoses, boots, shoes, sandals, slippers, socks, hosiery, night splints, bandages, braces, partial-foot prosthetics, or other devices—interacts with your foot. Footwear is often a crucial part of your recommended treatment plan.
