Concussion Rehabilitation

Concussion Rehabilitation Program at ALPHA Health Services:

The concussion program was developed by Charlotte Anderson (Ph.D.), Dr. Jim Niu, and Dr. Alex Francello. The program combines clinical research, a multi disciplinary medical approach to care, and years of experience working with patients suffering with acute or chronic symptoms post concussion. The concussion program at ALPHA is recognized across Canada, and is proudly affiliated with the Orthopedic Rehab Institute.

The Concussion Rehabilitation Program at ALPHA is led by Charlotte Anderson. Charlotte continues to be a leader in concussion research, currently a Post Doctoral Fellow at McMaster University. She completed her Ph.D. in The Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto, in Rehabilitation Science. Her work in clinical concussion rehabilitation has been published internationally, and she has developed the concussion curriculum for MSc Physiotherapy programs in Canada. She has won awards for her clinical work, been recognized by her peers as a leader in the field, has developed virtual concussion programs for patients living in remote areas of Canada, and has received research funding for her projects.

What is a concussion?

A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or by a hit to the body that causes the head and brain to move rapidly back and forth. This sudden movement can cause the brain to bounce around or twist in the skull, creating chemical changes in the brain and sometimes stretching and damaging brain cells.  Injury to the neck, including soft tissue and muscle injury, as well as the vestibular system, are also common with concussions.

Alpha Health Services is the best concussion clinic in Toronto and we offer treatment and rehabilitation services for the same.

Concussion symptoms

The signs of a concussion may include:

  • memory problems
  • confusion
  • drowsiness or feeling sluggish
  • dizziness
  • double vision or blurred vision
  • headache
  • nausea or vomiting
  • balance problems
  • sensitivity to light
  • slowed reaction to stimuli

The symptoms may begin immediately, or they may not develop for hours, days, weeks, or even months following your injury.

At ALPHA Health Services, we offer concussion management in Toronto, i.e. we extend treatment and rehabilitation to the patients . Our physiotherapists are trained extensively in concussion management, conduct leading-edge research in the field, and train other physiotherapists in how to manage and rehabilitate concussion. We are affiliated with Holland Bloorview Kids Rehab Hospital and Women’s College Hospital.

What is Concussion Rehabilitation?

We cater the rehabilitation to each individual and focus on treating the person, rather than just the symptoms. It is important that you are aware of what a concussion is and what can aggravate your symptoms. We take the time to educate you on the mechanism of injury, why symptoms can be aggravated, and what you can do to help yourself.

We also address secondary issues that may be contributing to concussion symptoms – specifically injury to the neck, or vestibular symptom. We extend complete concussion management in Toronto. Often these areas are overlooked after a concussion, but they can mimic symptoms of a concussion. We are passionate about helping and rehabilitating the patients post-concussion.

What to expect at your first visit?

At your first visit in our Concussion rehabilitation program, we will get to learn more about your injury, your symptoms, and who you are. We will perform a physical assessment to identify possible injuries in the neck or vestibular system. From there, we will educate you on your injury, and put a rehabilitation plan in place.

My concussion was several months ago, but I still am experiencing symptoms?

The sooner we can assess you, the better. There are several physiological systems that can be disrupted after a concussion, including your neck, balance, inner ears and vision. The sooner we can diagnosis, treat, and manage, the sooner we will get you back to feeling like you again!

Is rehabilitation only for kids?

No! Concussions can affect anyone, at any age. We treat concussion injuries, not age groups!

Do I need a doctor’s referral?

You do not need a doctors referral for physiotherapy, but we ask that you have been cleared by a doctor prior to commencing physiotherapy.
